Xibalba Nature Reserve to Open 2022

The latest Xcaret attraction, Xibalba Nature Reserve, was originally scheduled to open Dec. 2020 but got delayed due to COVID.  Its latest opening date is supposed to be sometime in June 2022 with a capacity reported to be 2,000 visitors.  Xibalba is located by the city of Valladolid in the central part of the Yucatan Peninsula fairly close to the Chichen Itza ruins.  In fact, many Chichen Itza tours include a stop at Valladolid either before or after visiting the ruins.  Count on tours or private drives to take a couple of hours from Playa del Carmen to reach this destination.

Playa Del Carmen Project Completed

The mayor of Playa del Carmen, Laura Beristain, just announced that the huge renovation project of downtown PDC’s Fifth Avenue and Parque Fundadores is now done.  With an investment of 107 million pesos, the renovation included “tiling”/cement block work on Fifth Avenue, sitting benches and a new look to the popular Parque Fundadores (including wheelchair ramps), drainage wells to avoid flooding during heavy rains, connection to the city’s sanitary system, new electric/gas lines/internet cables installed, new LED lighting for nighttime security, security cameras installed, as well as cosmetic features like the planting of new flora.

New Site at Chichen Itza to Open 2022

There will be a new “attraction within an attraction” at Chichen Itza starting next year.  The National Institute of Anthropology and History has announced that Chichen Viejo, or “old Chichen” is a “Mayan palace within the middle of the original flora” with scenes depicting the creation of the cosmos; reportedly, the new site is a place where priests performed rituals related to fertility and “divine needs”.
