Kind of in a rush to get to work this a.m. so I’m not going to say much except here’s a video on what the brand new SLS Playa Mujeres looks like…it was supposed to be a Melia property (Paradisus Playa Mujeres) but that never opened, so here’s what it looks like with new owners.
Well, at least it’s something…Marriott has several very nice pics posted of what some rooms and restaurants will look like when the renovations are all completed. Marriott’s website also states that this resort is projected to reopen January 2025, but no specific date yet has been mentioned. I haven’t even read anywhere they are accepting any bookings. I attempted a couple of dummy bookings online for various dates in Jan and Feb 2025, but I kept getting “Your selected hotel has no available rooms”. So I’m thinking that it may be longer than Jan. 2025 before the resort is reopened.
Isla Mujeres is just a short ferry ride away from Cancun–there are several ferry piers within Cancun’s Hotel Zone as well as two in the area just south of Playa Mujeres, so it’s fairly easy to get over to that small island.
I guess SLS Playa Mujeres owners found something in the fine print to overturn the Mexican government’s denial of entry to the resort due to safety risks–some issue with the entrances and exits…They officially opened and let in their first guests yesterday.
FYI: The resort did indeed open Nov. 10, 2024. I guess they found a way around the safety issues…
Just read in TripAdvisor that check-in staff is offering new guests an upgrade to the new Indigo section at Dreams Sapphire for $150 USD extra p/night…I’m assuming that means it’s now open for business. Don’t forget with the Indigo upgrade you get access to the adults-only rooftop pool area, access to Indigo room section, but I don’t think the new Seaside restaurant is open yet, the website says “coming soon”. Besides having a few short videos on the resort’s FB page and their Instagram page, there’s not much out yet on social media about guests’ experience in this new section. I’ve been wondering for several years what was to become of Paradisus Playa Mujeres. I parasailed over it, read about it, saw pics and videos about it, but it never seemed to officially open. While I don’t know exactly what happened behind the scenes, it looks like Meliá has sold this property (it is no longer advertised as a Meliá property on their website), and instead this resort will open Nov. 15, 2024, as SLS Playa Mujeres.
Update: While Dreams Sapphire recently posted a promo video of their Indigo section amenities and labelled it as their “Grand Opening”, I’m still not convinced it’s open to the general public. I’m still waiting for Instagram pics or YouTube videos to come out…If anyone knows differently let me know.
For those of you familiar with Secrets Tulum, you already know that this resort is not located on the beach. You have to take a 20 min. shuttle ride from the main part of the resort to reach their beautiful beach club which is now referred to as Zamna Beach Club.
