I’ve been wondering for several years what was to become of Paradisus Playa Mujeres. I parasailed over it, read about it, saw pics and videos about it, but it never seemed to officially open. While I don’t know exactly what happened behind the scenes, it looks like Meliá has sold this property (it is no longer advertised as a Meliá property on their website), and instead this resort will open Nov. 15, 2024, as SLS Playa Mujeres.
FYI: It was announced Oct. 11, 2024 that Quintana Roo government has decided to not enforce the tax on bringing multiple electronic devices into Mexico for international guests. Here’s the link to the news article…

For those of you new to staying at all-inclusive resorts, you may be wondering what exactly is included for the price you pay? Very relevant question and one that shouldn’t be taken for granted. A huge way to ruin a vacation is to have one or a multiple number of expectations about your stay and to be disillusioned as to what amenities and services you expect to receive once you are at a resort.

One of the most complained about aspects of staying at an all-inclusive resort is that of dealing with “chair hogging”. You’ve probably run into this if you’ve stayed at any resort…You know, those guests who get up at 5 a.m. to “reserve” poolside/beach loungers or daybeds with a shoe, book, towel, practically anything they can get their hands on, go back to bed to sleep, and then show up around 12 noon or later (and quite possibly never show up at all) to claim their lounger. I’ve even seen incidents where one guest claimed primo loungers both poolside AND at the beach, but that was around 7 a.m. not 5 a.m.–I’m not typically a morning person so I even doubt if there is such a time as 5 a.m. In the meantime, other guests trying to get a lounger in a normal manner can’t find any, or wind up with less than desirable lounger locations such as no shade, far from the pool, obstructed views, or cramped spaces. Or even worse, guests may wind up with only one dilapidated lounger and have to share it which is not a very relaxing way to spend the day at the pool or beach.
I’m going to be offline from Aug. 8 through the 12th; I’m going to be staying on Catalina Island with my grandson and doing my grandma thing, so I won’t be posting nor will I be answering emails or commenting on blog post comments. This is the second installment of my new blog series, and this one addresses staying safe while doing what we all enjoy doing while staying at an all-inclusive resort–eating and drinking without worrying about added charges to our bill.
In researching and writing my book on all-inclusive resorts in Cancun and the Riviera Maya, I have discovered many common questions potential vacationers to this area of Mexico have asked. While these questions are covered in the book, I am going to give everyone a heads up and answer them ahead of the book’s publication.
Any fans of the Iberostar resort complex in the Riviera Maya? It’s a mega-resort with five separate all-inclusives; where you book will determine which other resorts you can access. For those who aren’t familiar with the property, there are almost 2,000 rooms, 20+ restaurants, more than a dozen pools, two spas, two gyms, and a small shopping mall across the road from the resorts. There is a lazy river, wave pool, and a newer water park for those who want some water fun opportunities during vacation.
