Iberostar Selection Riviera Cancun, not to be confused with Iberostar Selection Cancun which is located in Cancun’s Hotel Zone, recently opened its doors after a rather lengthy period of being in limbo after a guest death when it was a Karisma resort. TAFER bought it and put $ in it, but rather quickly sold it to Iberostar who put some more $ in it and opened its door to families and adult vacationers alike in late 2025.
In terms of total transparency, I haven’t yet stayed at either of these two newer resorts but they are definitely on my “to do” list. I do know from emails sent to me that many vacationers are interested in which of these resorts to choose for their next vacation.
For those of you who’ve already stayed at Valentin Imperial Riviera Maya, you already know that this resort is a beautiful adults-only property located on a great stretch of beach north of Playa del Carmen. It has one of the largest resort pools in the entire area and couples usually rave about their stay with many of them being repeat visitors. If you are looking for a larger resort that has more of a Mexico (think Mexican Colonial) feel than contemporary architecture this may be your next vacation home away from home.
The brand new Majestic Mirage Costa Mujeres is an all-suites luxury family-friendly resort located right next to Riu Latino in the Costa Mujeres area north of downtown Cancun. It has an adults-only section as well as amenities like its own water park. Take a look at the very short video below about what this amenity looks like…I’m pretty sure Majestic produced this video.
It’s impossible for me to keep track of every resort update in this part of Mexico, so here’s another surprise for me–Beloved Playa Mujeres has been doing a renovation in phases over the past year while it’s been open and now has some renovated rooms available (I believe they are still working on the Casitas and will continue to do so during 2026).
If anyone follows vloggers/frequent videos out about resorts, there are a few that currently stand out in terms of quality and thoroughness. My personal favorites are the following: 3 Days 3 Noches, Coolist, Memories and Mojitos, Christine Turner, Where We Going Next, and the Flip Flop Traveler.

This new Riu resort is on my list for my May 2026 trip–Hotel Riu Ventura just opened a couple of weeks ago and already hit 75% occupancy rate prior to high season Christmas stays, so you can be sure that this one is a highly desired family-friendly property. That kind of occupancy rate is almost unheard of in the all-inclusive resort market for soft openings (the first 3 months it’s opened).
