Resorts New Policy Concerning COVID Testing and On-Site Stays….

l am starting a new post which will be updated as I come across the most recent information concerning on-site COVID testing and what happens if you test positive for COVID….

  • Karisma resorts (Azul, El Dorado, and Margaritaville)
  • Playa resorts (Hyatt including Turquoise Cancun AO section, Hilton PDC, Panama JackPC
  • Excellence resorts (includes Finest and Beloved resorts)
  • AIC Hotel Group (Hard Rock, UNICO, Live Aqua, Grand Fiesta Americana, Fiesta Americana)
  • Palace resorts (Moon, Grand, Beach, Playacar, Le Blanc, Sun)
  • Royal resorts (Royal Sands, Royal Cancun, Royal Haciendas, Grand Residences)
  • Hotel Xcaret Mexico is offering antigen COVID tests for $19 p/test (PCR tests will cost extra–antigen tests were first advertised as being complimentary but now have a charge.  Tests can be scheduled 10 days prior to arrival).  If any guest tests positive they will be offered a free stay for up to 14 days if the following condition exists:  two guests staying in the same room both test positive. This is in effect until March 31, 2021.
  • Blue Diamond resorts (Royalton Chic Suites Cancun, Royalton Riviera Cancun, Planet Hollywood Cancun)
  • Riu resorts is offering free antigen COVID tests on-site (there is no mention whether PCR tests will also be offered on-site).  Results should be obtained within 72 hrs. prior to departure back to the US.  If a guest tests positive, a free stay may be obtained for up to 10 days–this includes all family members staying in the same room.  This is in effect until March 31, 2021.
  • Palladium Hotels and Resorts is offering free antigen COVID tests on-site for all Palladium Rewards members and to all guests registering to the loyalty program during their stay.  PCR tests will be an added cost but will also be offered at Palladium resorts.  For those who may test positive, up to three guests staying in the same room will have a free stay for up to 10 days–this only applies to guests who’ve booked directly with Palladium (not a third party) because the new Stay Safe-Plus Free Care Insurance goes into effect when guests check-in.
  • Haven Resort is offering free on-site antigen testing, PCR tests will be an additional cost.  Guests testing positive along with a travel companion will be offered discounted quarantine extended stays.  This is in effect until March 31, 2021.
  • Valentin Imperial Riviera Maya will start administering antigen tests on-site starting Jan. 23, 2021 which will cost $33 USD.
  • Atelier and Estudio resorts will offer NAAT and PCR tests on-site but both have an extra cost.  So far there is no word about on-site complimentary stays for those who test positive.  UPDATE:  Atelier just announced they will be offering two free NAAT tests p/suite PLUS up to 14 day free stay for the guest testing positive ONLY.  Any traveling companions will NOT be receiving a free stay as well.  The resort WILL off a “special rate” to the traveling companion, though.
  • Catalonia resorts will offer on-site testing–$50 p/antigen test and $150 p/PCR test.  No free or discounted stays for guests testing positive.  Update:  Catalonia just announced free antigen testing with a 3-night minimum stay; also, anyone testing positive along with one travel companion staying in the same room will get a 10-day complimentary stay.
  • Majestic Elegance (Majestic has updated their info as more resorts are offering better COVID-related deals if guests test positive).  The resort will offer on-site antigen testing–the resort doesn’t specifically state that it’s free, but antigen testing may turn out to be free; check with the resort for final details.  Majestic will offer a complimentary insurance policy for guests which guarantees a discounted stay for those who test positive.
  • Solaris Hotels (GR Solaris Cancun, GR Caribe, Royal Solaris Cancun).  Testing has a nominal charge, and reduced rate of $30 p/guest p/night for those who test positive.
  • Omni Cancun is offering free COVID tests on-site.  No word about discounted stays, howevere.
  • Grand Sirenis Riviera Maya will provide free on-site antigen testing with stays/reservations made by March 31, 2021, but this is new–the test will remain FREE with resort stays until August 31, 2021.
  • Bahia Principe resorts will offer free on-site antigen testing for guests who book DIRECTLY with Bahia Principe and are staying at least three nights.  Still no offer for free or discounted stays if someone tests positive.
  • Iberostar resorts will offer free on-site antigen testing and complimentary stays for up to 10 days for those who test positive if guests book DIRECTLY with Iberostar online or their call center (testing will be done off-site at Iberostar Cozumel, however).  This offer will last until March 31, 2021, and may be continued after that date as well.  Booking directly with Iberostar means guests will be covered, free of charge, with the company’s Extra Care Insurance plan and the Travel At Ease complimentary assurance package–click on the links to read more about what those plans do and do not cover.
  • Barcelo resorts (Barcelo Maya Grand including the Beach, Caribe, Colonial, Tropical, Palace, and Maya Riviera, Allegro Playacar, Occidental at Xcaret, Occidental Tucancun, Occidental Costa Cancun, and Royal Hideaway Playacar).  I’ve waited to post this one since Barcelo has such a dominating resort presence in Cancun and the Riviera Maya.  While you will be able to get your COVID test on-site, there will be a charge (I believe it’s from $30-$33 p/antigen test).  No complimentary stays for those who test positive offered at this time, but a discounted rate is being discussed by management.  How disappointing that Barcelo has not stepped up to the plate and offered what other resorts are clearly offering to attract guests.
  • Melia resorts (Paradisus Cancun, Paradisus Playa Mujeres, Paradisus Playa del Carmen, The Reserve at Paradisus Playa del Carmen).  Melia FINALLY put out a statement concerning their new COVID testing policy.  They will offer free on-site antigen testing for guests staying a minimum of 3 nights, while PCR tests will be arranged for guests (I’m assuming there will be an extra cost involved with that test). Melia is also offering a complimentary travel insurance policy for all guests, no matter how the resort has been booked, which will aid in covering COVID costs.  I haven’t read the details of that policy yet, but from the wording it strongly suggests that the person testing positive will be allowed a stay of up to 15 days while traveling companions will receive a discounted stay.
  • H10 resorts (Ocean Coral and Turquesa, Ocean Riviera Paradise, Ocean Maya Royale).  H10 has just announced that they will offer testing on-site, but the exact cost is yet unknown.  While they will offer “distressed rates” for those who test positive (along with those traveling together), there is not a specific amount listed yet.  Update:  2 free antigen tests p/room with a minimum 4 night stay.  Free 10 day stay for anyone testing positive, plus a discounted rate for one travel companion.  Here’s the link.
  • Golden Parnassus resort in Cancun offers on-site testing and continued stays at a reduced rate.
  • Desire Resorts (Desire Pearl, Desire Riviera Maya, and Temptation Resort Cancun is also included in this resort grouping–let me know if it’s not).  2 free antigen tests with a 3 night stay; if someone tests positive it’s $125 p/person p/night.
  • The Reef Playacar will offer on-site discounted antigen testing ($33) plus a complimentary 14-day stay for guests who test positive along with one travel companion.   The complimentary stay is good for the length of the testing requirement for international travelers.  There is one catch to the comp stay, and that is guests must have stayed only at a Reef Resort prior to staying at The Reef Playacar.  Alcoholic beverages will not be served (no alcohol delivered to your room) to those in quarantine.
  • El Cid Resorts (Hotel Marina El Cid Spa and Beach resort, Ventus at Marina El Cid) will offer two free antigen tests with stays of 3+ nights.  No mention, though, of free stays if one tests positive.

This is an ongoing list, check back for more info….

    • I haven’t heard yet, but I believe Occidental is now run by Barcelo and Barcelo is currently not offering free tests or complimentary stays for those who test positive. I will do more checking and get back to you.

  1. Are you going to keep updating this list? I have a reservation in late March for myself and two adult children for Barcelo. May have to cancel and switch to RIU if Barcelo doesn’t step up to the plate.

    • I try to update it daily with new info. I just updated the Barcelo section yesterday with lower costs for antigen tests. As far as I know, Barcelo hasn’t yet changed their mind about about free/reduced rate stays if someone tests positive for COVID.

  2. I notice that H10 resorts is not listed in your update….any news on the Ocean Riviera Paradise for testing and/or reduced stay if test is positive?

    • They just announced that testing will be on-site and for a nominal cost–no exact price has yet been listed since they may not know it yet. Also, no amount yet for discounted rates for those who test positive. They did mention that their discounted rates would cover vacationers traveling together.

    • H10 just announced that there will be 2 free antigen tests (on-site) with a minimum 4 night stay. Extra antigen tests will be $25 p/person. For anyone testing positive there will be a free 10 day stay and reduced rates for one travel companion.

    • Currently charging $20 for antigen on-site tests; PCR tests can be arranged on-site but will cost you more. Currently, the resort is offering “distressed rates” if you test positive. I don’t know exactly what that rate is at the present time.

  3. Hello. My husband & I are planning a 7 day trip to Cancun to stay at Desire Pearl for our 35th Wedding anniversary March 20-27, 2021. Will this resort be offering covid PCR testing for return traveling and what if someone tests positive? God forbid…I will have had my covid vaccine by then, but not sure if my husband will by then, unfortunately. Thank you.

    • Info is located on their website in the upper right hand corner, “Important Information for US Travelers”. 2 free antigen tests with a minimum 3 night stay. If someone tests positive it’s an extra $125 p/person p/night with a maximum extended stay of 14 days. If you are Canadian, you need the PCR test, but that is not being offered on a complimentary basis. Have a wonderful anniversary!!

  4. I will be fully vaccinated when I travel to Occidental Tucancun . My question is
Does the hotel offer a test prior to returning home?
    Thanks

    • Yes they offer it. However, make sure you plan to take it a at least two days before your flight. My appointment was at 10AM and didn’t get the results til 10PM even though it was a rapid test. Ended up having to take the test at an off site location to make sure I had it by my flight at 7PM. Don’t make the same mistake as I did 🙂

    • Occidental is now owned by Barcelo. I read that all on-site Barcelo property antigen testings are $33-$40, while PCR tests go from $120-150. I imagine some prices have gone up slightly since originally posted once the resorts have experienced the actual prices for all those tests being performed and analyzed.
