PCR or NAAT/Antigen Test to Return From Cancun…

The new CDC requirement of a negative COVID test result for US visitors returning by air from Cancun is causing a great deal of confusion and uncertainty amongst vacationers.  There are several questions being asked most frequently at this point:

  • What type of test do I get since there are several kinds available?
  • If I test positive, where will I stay?
  • Where do I obtain this test in Cancun/Riviera Maya?

First of all, there are three different types of COVID tests available in Cancun/Riviera Maya–Rapid Blood Test, Rapid Antigen Test, and the PCR Test.  While Canadians are required to obtain the PCR test to re-enter Canada, Americans evidently have the option to obtain either a NAAT-Antigen test or the PCR test.  If you want to pay less at a clinic or lab, know that the PCR test is the most expensive.

Second, AMResorts just posted an official statement about the new CDC requirement and its ramifications which I thought was very comprehensive.  In addition to being very specific about the new CDC requirement, it also announced that AMResorts will be making their properties available for existing guests who test positive at the end of their stay and cannot leave the country–the cost of the extended stay due to a positive COVID test will be covered by the resort for up to 14 days for the guest and one traveling companion sharing the same room. This policy is valid only through March 31, 2021.  I hope I read this right; if anyone has different info please let me know because this is a VERY BIG DEAL for those going to Cancun within the next several months and staying at an AMResort (re. Dreams, Secrets, Sunscape, Now, Breathless, Reflect, and Zoetry resorts).  The governor of Quintana Roo and the heads of the Cancun Tourism Board in the region are trying to come up with a comprehensive plan and list of hotels and resorts willing to host guests who’ve tested positive for COVID, so that issue is still being decided.

Third, as to where to obtain COVID tests–again, that is another issue still in flux. There are resorts that appear to be more than happy to do this on-site while others will make appointments at local clinics or hospitals for guests to obtain these tests.  As soon as I get a more comprehensive list I will post it (at this time I know that CostaMed clinics in Cancun/Riviera Maya perform the testing, but I’m sure there will be more since only one clinic choice for so many travelers would overwhelm the service offered through this company).

Expect that this new travel requirement will be a very fluid situation for awhile which will result in changes in how to meet the CDC specifications and results of positive test results.  Keep checking back for more info!

  1. We are booked to stay at the Barcelo Maya Beach Resort from March 13-22. I contacted the resort which stated that there will be tests available at the resort by appointment only (as long as tests kits last/appointments are available). If you are not able to get an on-resort test, you must book with a private clinic in Playa Del Carmen. Again, if appointments are available and test kits are available. Please post if our resort is included on the positive test/lay over free stay list.

  2. we are worried that the test to get back in the united states that amresorts has offered their clients is not accepted by the united airlines?? they will only take the nose swab test..is this correct? and the free test they mention is just a finger prick, that is not
    acceptable

    • I don’t know what UA accepts, all I know is that one either has to take an antigen/NAAT or PCR test for US re-entry. Your best bet is to contact AMResorts or the specific resort you will be staying at and ask them and express your concerns.

    • I just looked up UA COVID test regulations. It doesn’t mention only nasal swab test results are accepted; it says that the test “must be a viral test, molecular or antigen”. AMResorts is offering a rapid antigen test, so everything should be OK as long as test results are negative.

  3. Hello,

I’ve been looking for any Covid testing information related to the Paradisus Resort; so far, no luck. Any help would be greatly appreciated; we are scheduled to arrive in mid-March.

    • While there is no official statement for Melia properties and the new COVID testing requirement, I did read that an individual who contacted one of their resorts directly was told the COVID test was an additional cost. No mention was made as to what would happen if a guest tested positive. I will keep tracking this.

    • Melia just posted earlier today that they will be offering free antigen testing for guests staying a minimum of 3 nights; I’m assuming PCR tests will cost extra but the resort states they will help arrange them. Melia is also offering discounted stays for those affected by a positive test result; while not specifically stated, it looks like a stay of up to 15 days will be allowed and traveling companions will be offered deeply discounted rates.
