New CDC Regulations Concerning International Air Travel for US

FYI:  While Canadians are required to get a PCR test, Americans are required to get a “viral test”, which, to the best of my understanding, can be either a NAAT or antigen test.  That means Americans can get a less expensive test option performed and analyzed and still meet the new CDC requirement.

Well, it’s not a rumor anymore (as I wrote in my last post), it’s a new order from the CDC.  US citizens and legal permanent residents ages 2+ returning from foreign countries by air must obtain either a negative COVID test result, or written documentation from a healthcare provider that you have recovered from COVID and are safe to travel.  The negative test result must be obtained with 72-hrs. of your return flight.  If you don’t have either of these pieces of documentation, you will not be allowed to get onto your flight back home to the US.  This new order goes into effect Jan. 26, 2021.

It’s just a guess, but Cancun’s tourism industry may once again take another major hit with both Canadian and American vacationers having more travel restrictions.  I have already read many social media comments stating that vacationers have or will be canceling their trips to Mexico with this new order because they don’t want to be stuck in Mexico incurring extra costs and not being able to return to work if they happen to get a positive result.

What do you think?  Would you go to Mexico with this new CDC order?

  1. My concern for the new regulation-restriction would be where will I get the test in Mexico and what if the results do not come back in a timely fashion? The PCR test is not the instant tests on the market. We all know that at times things in Mexico can and do run on their own schedule and not always the planned schedule….

    • More resorts are arranging to have testing occur on-site, or staff will help you make a testing appointment at the nearest testing location. I agree with your concern about timing, I would wait this one out and see how it progresses and what the timelines actually are.

  2. We are booked to go to Mexico March 13th at an all inclusive resort. Questions: where do we get a covid test while in Mexico (the resort)? How long will it take to process the test (5 days for a proper test in the US…how long in Mexico?). Contacting Apple vacations. If they host us longer in the hotel (free), fine. But need to ensure they will pay for our change of airfare back.

    • Many resorts are supposedly going to have on-site testing, or will help make testing reservations for guests at the nearest testing facility. The powers that be are currently working with various Cancun hotels to see which ones will be used for those who test positive. This is a very fluid situation right now with not enough known and a looming deadline. Hopefully things will be straightened out by your vacation dates
