Travel and Leisure’s Top 25 Resorts in Mexico

This year’s World’s Best Awards Survey done by T&L brought some interesting results for Mexico.  Lots of Cabo places on the list (interesting because Cabo beaches are black-flagged in many areas (unswimmable–injury or death “imminent” if you enter the water), some for Puerto Vallarta (understandable, it’s a beautiful area surrounded by jungle and mountains), Ixtapa/Zihuatanejo (I’ve only been to the Ixtapa Club Med and that area was very nice), one for Acapulco (Acapulco is too crime-ridden to risk it in my opinion), and a few for Cancun/Riviera Maya.  Here are the ones listed for Cancun and the Riviera Maya; not all are all-inclusive.

  • The #1 choice of the survey was the Viceroy Riviera Maya, a small, adults-only all-inclusive optional resort in the Riviera Maya.  I wrote a previous blog post about it, you can read it here.  Of course, this survey result means higher prices.
  • The #5 choice was the family-friendly Mahekal Beach Resort.  Interestingly, they now offer an all-inclusive package–the package does not include room service or bottles of liquor–see the list of inclusions here.
  • The #6 choice was Rosewood Mayakoba, not an all-inclusive.
  • The #14 choice was Vidanta, a mega-resort but not all-inclusive.
  • The #21 choice was Ritz-Carlton Cancun, not an all-inclusive.
  • The #23 choice was Banyan Tree Mayakoba, not an all-inclusive.
  • The #25 choice was Le Blanc in Cancun, an adults-only all-inclusive which is known for its spa and customer service.  I can’t imagine how much this accolade will increase prices, they are already astronomical (a basic lagoon view room in slow season is $1154 p/night–rack rate).

Well, what do you think?  Going to any one of these in the near future?
