Major Transportation Issue…

The other day I read about a robbery which occurred on one of the public buses in Cancun’s Hotel Zone.  This is the first such robbery I know of occurring in this area of Mexico since I started vacationing here in 2012.  According to the news story, a single adult male boarded one of the public buses, brandished a gun, and demanded all cell phones. While the driver attempted to stop him, he was hit in the head with the weapon and the robber quickly went through the bus collecting all cell phones, then departed the bus.

This is pretty scary since I am used to taking the public buses in the Hotel Zone when I stay in that area.  If I were coming to the Hotel Zone in the near future I would definitely avoid taking the public buses there since the robber was not apprehended, plus copy cat crimes may occur; as far as I know, the robber got away and has not yet been apprehended.

The other possibility is to still take the public buses but carry along an old cell phone with you if you have one–if you are willing to potentially experience a robbery such as this you can still hand over an old non-working cell phone since robbers like this are in a hurry with the onboard security cameras and the public location and exposure to capture.  Vacationers typically take the public buses which travel along the major Hotel Zone road (Avenida Kukulkan), and I am imagining there will be an increased Cancun police presence by bus stops because of this incident.

Stay safe!!
