All-Inclusive Optional–Villa del Palmar Cancun

I’ve decided to do a series on all-inclusive optional resorts in Cancun and the Riviera Maya–not too many people know all the options in this category and may be interested in trying out one or two to see how they compare to resorts which are totally all-inclusive.

Today I’m going to briefly review the family-friendly Villa del Palmar Cancun (VDPC), an architecturally beautiful resort in the Playa Mujeres area of Cancun north of downtown.  It’s on the southern edge of a series of all-inclusive resorts including The Beloved, Excellence Playa Mujeres, and Finest Playa Mujeres resorts.  Paradisus Playa Mujeres is on the other side of  VDPC.

VDPC has a strong timeshare emphasis, so don’t be surprised at multiple requests to attend the infamous “breakfast” which turns out to be a 3+ hr. timeshare talk (the primary bummer of some of these lovely resorts).  Many of the larger suites have full kitchens and small washers and dryers; even the smallest rooms (Deluxe Garden and Ocean rooms) have a microwave and Nespresso coffee maker. Most suites have a balcony hammock.  If you want to splurge you can book a suite in their Luxury Residences Collection which includes Penthouse, Loft, and Oceanfront room categories.  The Residence Collection differs from the Suite categories in terms of upgraded rooms, in-room liquor, upgraded toiletries, and better views.  Residence Collection suites are primarily two or three bedrooms.

Vacationers who book the all-inclusive option can book for only a portion of their travel dates or for their entire stay.  If booking for only part of one’s stay, the all-inclusive portion must include a minimum of three consecutive days and everyone in your room must also book the same meal plan.  It’s probably easiest to outline what’s NOT available with the all-inclusive plan at this resort; it’s surprisingly comprehensive for those who want to pay for drinks and food upfront.  Here’s the no-no list:

  • Foods such as lobster, angus steak, and lamb are an extra cost
  • Imported and craft beers are an extra cost (beers at the resort included in the AI plan are Corona, Modelo, and Pacifico)
  • You cannot order take-out from restaurants/drinks from bars
  • Bottled drinks at bars are an extra cost
  • Palmita Market groceries and supplies are an extra cost
  • The usual and expected extra costs, even at typical AI resorts, exist here like paying extra for laundry service, babysitting, use of resort telephone, etc.

The resort has five pools; however, the beachfront infinity pool is reserved for timeshare members.  There are two bars with swings for seats (one of my personal favorites at any resort), a unique spa in a jungle-like setting, and a quick walk to the Punta Sam ferry which will take guests over to Isla Mujeres (don’t miss spending beach time at Playa Norte on Isla Mujeres, and if you have time, rent a golf cart and explore the small island on your own).

This resort may be a good option for those who plan on spending part of their vacation time with a pre-arranged itinerary (excursions anyone?) and then want to spend the rest of the time doing some serious R&R.

Here’s a short video of pics of the Luxury Residence Collection guest suites and some general resort shots.  Who’s got their eye on the Penthouse Suite??
