What is sargassum?
Although my first response to this question is “irritating and a potential vacation disaster for beach lovers”, here’s a scientific explanation to the phenomena we all hate to see when we visit Cancun/Riviera Maya. Hope this helps answer questions about where it comes from.
My daughter is getting married in the Mayan Riviera, just north of Playa del Carmen. Is Sargassum there too? I am not looking forward to the sight and smell of that.
Deb: Yes, the sargassum problem is present all along the eastern coast of this part of the Yucatan peninsula. Right now there is a minimal amount of it, but it is not that simple to predict nor is it seasonal. Some periods of time are bad, others are great. It’s hard to predict. Your daughter’s wedding may find no sargassum, but it is a risk.
