Ongoing Road Construction in Riviera Maya

Be prepared for road delays for the next TWO YEARS when coming and going to resorts in the Riviera Maya.  Work recently began on the repair of sinkholes and changes that need to be made to support the building of the Maya Train on the main highway south of the airport all the way to Tulum.  Current work is focused on repairing the sinkholes at Km. 306 (that’s about where the Catalonia Playa Maroma resort is located–think Puerto Aventuras) and Paraiso Beach area which is just south of the Tulum ruins.

Planning for this can be very important when it comes to making transportation reservations to return to the Cancun airport.  You don’t want to miss your flight because of traffic delays.  It may be advisable to think about leaving your resort 3+ hrs. prior to your return flight in order to give yourself enough time to take care of business at the airport–visitors still have to fill out their health questionnaire prior to going through security as well as provide proof of a negative COVID test result if flying internationally.  The further south along the highway to Tulum you are staying, the more time you may need to get back to the airport.

There’s nothing you can do about the time it will take to get to the resort; just sit back and relax while your driver gets you safely to your resort destination.  If you are taking a private shuttle to your resort and cannot wait to start your vacation, see if you can pre-order beers–Canada Transfers can provide soft drinks and Corona beer for $1/$2 for other types, I imagine other shuttle companies would do the same.

See you in Cancun!

  1. I found your site very helpful I do have a question but I can’t seem to get a clear answer. Travel from the United States to Cancun does it require a negative Covid test?

    • If you are leaving from the US and traveling to Cancun airport, the only COVID test you need is to return to the US. The US is still requiring a negative COVID test result to get on a plane to return to the US. Most resorts these days have access to on-site COVID tests on certain days (some are free while some will have a cost involved), make sure you book your appointment when you first get to your resort.
