More Info On Visitax…

If you haven’t already read my other blog post regarding the new (well, let’s say newly enforced) VISITAX, please click here to review exactly what it is and why it’s important to know about this Cancun departure tax.

Since I will be staying in the Riviera Maya area from Dec. 6-16, I have already paid my VISITAX fee online since I have had trouble in the past accessing the web from the Cancun airport.  Of course, you can pay this tax either prior to leaving for your trip, during your trip, or at the airport when you leave (there is no actual booth at the airport that will allow you to pay this tax, you have to pay it online and get a QR Code).

To pay the tax, visit the VISITAX website at visitax.gob.mx/sitio.  Click on Make Your Payment and follow directions.  The Mexican government wants to know when you are leaving so put the departure date for leaving Mexico to come back home.  To get your QR Code after paying, there will be a page which comes up thanking you for payment, then  below that there will be in Spanish and English a directive to Download.  When you click on that, the next page will produce your QR Code along with your name, how much you paid, and your departure date from Cancun.  I printed out my QR Code to make things more simple since I like to have all my travel documents together in one place.  I still travel “old school” and like printed docs of all my resort confirmations, flight and transportation info and confirmations, but other travelers will just stick with having everything on their phone.  I like to prepare for the unexpected, lol, so print is my preference.  Make sure you have that QR Code available to show to any airport staff who may inquire if you’ve paid your VISITAX departure fee; you may be unable to board your flight unless you’ve shown to have paid it if anyone asks.  Inquiries about your stay are most likely to occur when you are standing in line to check-in at the Cancun airport upon departure.  You are likely to be asked about where you’ve stayed, how long you’ve been in Mexico, etc., so that is where I anticipate the VISITAX payment enforcement will occur.  I will let you know the rest of the procedure after I return from my stay.

This trip I will be staying at Wyndham Alltra Playa del Carmen, Secrets Tulum, and Hyatt Zilara Riviera Maya.  There may be several days I won’t be posting blog articles, but that’s only because I’m too busy having fun or taking pics.
