Attention travelers, if you have an acute case of beach withdrawal like I do right now, there is a cure–well, at least a temporary one. Fly to Cancun and visit Maroma Beach in the Riviera Maya, it’s only about a 40-min. drive south of the Cancun airport. Maroma Beach has won accolades from various travel media sources–the Travel Channel thought it noteworthy enough to put it within the top 10 spot in the World’s Best Beaches category several years running.
Maroma Beach offers white sand with a soft, powdered sugar texture along with the turquoise ocean water for which Cancun is famous. While all beaches in Mexico are public, there is no official public beach access to this particular beauty. So, in order to go there you realistically have to rent an accommodation at this location.
There are two all-inclusive resorts at Maroma Beach, Secrets Maroma Beach Riviera Cancun (an adults-only resort catering primarily to couples), and Catalonia Playa Maroma which is a family-friendly resort. The price point between them is fairly significant with the Secrets resort being considered a luxury property and the Catalonia falling within a more affordable category. To give an idea of rates, for the same dates in February 2022 Secrets is charging $814 p/night, while the Catalonia is charging $245 p/night.
Here’s a travel tip: to fully enjoy the beauty of this beach location, try to avoid being here during the months of June through October. That is when sargassum, that nasty brown algae, tends to be at its worst
