If you are staying near Playa del Carmen and just want something different for dinner away from your all-inclusive resort, here’s a very interesting option. It’s called Alux, (pronounced a’loosh), a restaurant outside of Playa del Carmen, and it’s located inside a cave cenote.
Alux is an upscale dining establishment specializing in seafood with regular seating as well as specialty seating. These seating “vaults” are typically reserved for special occasions for parties from 2 to 100. Looking for a special place to celebrate a milestone anniversary or want to pop the question? This may be the setting for you. There is a wine cellar from which you can personally choose your bottle of wine, a separate bar area, and seating can be had next to the cenote. Interior lighting is multicolored which makes for a surreal but dark dining experience. (Those who like to clearly see what they are eating may be challenged here).
If you enjoy the idea of eating inside a cave but don’t want the extra price, try staying at Hotel Xcaret Mexico. There are two cave restaurants there, Bio (vegetarian) and Las Cuevas (steakhouse). You don’t have to pay extra to eat at these two cave restaurants since the upfront price you already paid has already covered your meals).
Here’s a video about the Alux dining experience. What do you think? Have you every eaten at Alux?
