Islands Magazine Names Most Romantic Resorts in the Riviera Maya

There are two general travel magazines I must have–Travel and Leisure, and Islands.  I have been a big fan of Islands magazine for many years, and while the content has been streamlined recently I continue to appreciate the excellent showcasing of life on various islands throughout the globe.

While the Riviera Maya is not an island per se, the magazine posted an article naming their favorite Romantic Resorts For Couples in the Riviera Maya in Mexico.  Here are the all-inclusive ones listed:

  • Viceroy Riviera Maya (listed as #2).  41 villas with large bedroom and bathroom, private plunge pool, outdoor shower, and greeting/temazcal ceremonies done by a local Shaman.  Most of these villas are completely private with the exception of the beachfront villas.
  • El Dorado Casitas Royale (listed as #3). 205 suites with various amenities including Karisma’s famous Aguas del Amor outdoor shower, balcony/terrace daybed, and lots of extra touches promoting privacy and relaxation.  This resort is actually part of a “stay at one play at two” resort experience with direct access to its sister resort, El Dorado Royale.  With the combination of the two, guests have access to 18 bars, 13 restaurants, a fantastic spa, and multiple pools throughout both properties.
  • Secrets Maroma Beach Riviera Cancun (listed as #5).  412 rooms and suites, always a favorite for anniversary and honeymoon couples.  This resorts sits on one of the loveliest beaches in Mexico, Maroma Beach, which has been featured in various “best beach” travel clips and stories over the years.
  • UNICO 2087 (listed as #6).  448 suites with a true upscale look and feel, UNICO 2087 was one of the first all-inclusive resorts to include select tours and spa services in its total guest price–all guests pay is the 20% service fee (which is kind of like Palace resorts using their resort credits).  This resort got part of its name from its map coordinates–20 degrees north by 87 degrees west.
  • Temptation Cancun Resort (listed as #9).  430 rooms and suites with ultra-modern decor, this resort just finished a complete remodel a couple of years ago (we’re talking down to the foundation in parts).  The resort calls itself a “Playground for Grown-Ups” (age 21+), and has several topless-optional areas along with theme nights centered on sensuality and provocative-based activities and entertainment.  While this resort is not a straight up swingers’ hangout/pickup place, don’t be surprised if you are approached or you see this type of activity going on.  Don’t worry, though, this resort doesn’t allow public sex displays, that’s for the Desire resort guests.

I was surprised that Valentin Imperial Riviera Maya didn’t make the cut; that place is hugely popular with couples looking for a romantic yet fun atmosphere/experience.

What do you think?  Do you agree with Islands pics?  What would your pics be?
