I’m a big fan of resort loyalty programs.  They work like many other loyalty programs– you can join for free and enjoy extra benefits the more you stay at resorts within a particular chain or brand.  Of course, some are better than others; I’ve saved several hundred dollars each time I take a trip staying at a Catalonia resort since loyalty members get a certain percentage off a new booking.  That extra money I usually apply towards an excursion like visiting a cenote in the area.

I just discovered the other day that one of my favorite resort brands, Excellence Collection Resorts, now offers a loyalty program called The Excellence Collection Rewards.  Right now the company is in the middle of revamping the program, but if you appreciate this luxury brand you could potentially get a suite upgrade if you continue to accrue points via resort stays.

Here’s how it works.  In order to enroll you have to complete a resort stay; once you check-out you can enroll yourself online or wait until Excellence sends you an email inviting you to join.  Your first stay will apply towards your benefits, but you won’t be getting any loyalty member welcome gift or spa discount the first time around since you cannot join before checking out.  This is different than some other loyalty programs.  Perhaps this will change with their revamping process.
