I think that some travelers forget there is a Club Med in Cancun. Especially with all the new and renovated resorts with their “bells and whistles” , older and more established resorts like the Club Med chain may pale in comparison and become lower on travel wish lists.
For those not as familiar with this world recognized all-inclusive brand, Club Med is basically the great grandparent of the whole idea of an all-inclusive resort. The idea was generated by Gerard Blitz and Gilbert Trigano who wanted to start a tent village for sporting holidays in beautiful outdoor settings during the post-war period–Blitz even came up with a motto for the tent village holidays saying that “The aim in life is to be happy, and the time to be happy is now”. I second that. The first tent village started its operation in 1950 off the coast of Spain with 20 G.O.’s (Gentils Organisateurs) whose aim was to entertain and supervise village guests. Guests ate together at large tables and shared friendship and vacation/life stories–it was a rousing success from the first. 1957 brought the introduction of children to the concept along with the “necklace”; if you are familiar with the history of Club Med, you know that these necklaces became like currency one could use to purchase on-site items without carrying around cash. 1967 brought about the notion of the buffet; there have been minor overall changes since then but the underlying idea of the all-inclusive remains the same.
Club Med Cancun Yucatan is located on Punta Nizuc which is at the point south of the end of Cancun’s Hotel Zone. It is not far from the Cancun airport; guests can get into their airport transportation and be at the resort in about 15 min. The unique resort location on this point has resulted in the resort being able to offer multiple beach areas which are very different from one another. There is a swimming beach, a small beach leading to snorkeling opportunities, and the water sports beach. Nichupte Lagoon also lies slightly inland where water skiing and wake boarding lessons used to occur–check with the resort to make sure this activity area is still in operation.
Here are the “schools”/activity opportunities at this resort:
- flying trapeze school with circus activities (age 4+)
- tennis school
- archery school
- sailing school (age 6+)
- waterskiing/wake boarding school
- snorkeling opportunities
- kayaking and paddleboarding
- opportunity to sign up for Scuba and Snuba
- the usual–sand and water volleyball, dance lessons, daily exercise groups, etc.)
If you can afford the upgrade, make sure to book what used to be called the Jade Suite, now it’s listed under the Suite Exclusive Collection. You get access to a private oceanfront pool, larger rooms many of which are oceanfront, private beach area, and sunset sparkling wine and hors d’oeuvres.
Here’s a 10-min. video showing lots of drone views of the resort along with still shots of some of the resort highlights.
