Confused By My Last Post About Choosing An All-Inclusive Resort? Read This…

If you waded through my last post about choosing an all-inclusive resort (Part 2), here’s a post with a much quicker summary.  My last post was about considering weather and budget in your all-inclusive resort choices in the Cancun and Riviera Maya.  I know that one was rather convoluted so read on for the basics:

  • Hurricane/rainy season:  June through November
  • Worst months to visit:  January, August, September (highest possibility of experiencing hurricanes in September).  Think about visiting in June due to possibility of lots of rain; October is an iffy month to visit since you could experience a lot of rain/hurricane.
  • Best months to visit:  After Feb. 15 through the end of April.  I also like to visit mid July.

For budget considerations, here are lists of resort chains/companies for each budget category:  There are often several resorts under each named resort company:

  • Luxury Stay:  Grand Velas, Hotels Xcaret, Viceroy (all-inclusive optional), Blue Diamond, Secrets Impression, Karisma–Nickelodeon and Palafitos
  • Upper Budget:  Hyatt, ATELIER, Excellence, rest of Karisma resorts, Hard Rock, Palace resorts, Paradisus, UNICO 20 87, Haven Riviera Cancun, Palmaia The House of AiA, TRS properties (adults-only resorts within Grand Palladium resorts), Iberostar Grand Paraiso, Planet Hollywood, Live Aqua, Majestic Elegance, Fiesta Americana, Hilton
  • Mid Budget:  Royalton, Valentin Hotel Group, The Fives, Barcelo, Grand Palladium, Wyndham, Oasis, Akumal Bay Resort, Sandos, Crown Paradise Club, Club Med, Sunscape
  • Lower Budget:  Barcelo (some resorts are in the lower budget range), Riu, Wyndham Alltra, Iberostar, Krystal, Catalonia, Emporio Cancun, Flamingo Cancun, Reef resorts, Bahia Principe, Iberostar, Park Royal, Royal Solaris

  1. Hello! You stated one of the worst months to visit is January— is that due to weather or cost? I’m trying to pick a destination wedding location and date and I was considering January 2025. I’ve heard seaweed is less at that time.

    • Weather and could not comfortably use the pools. Granted, there is less sargassum but the potential for cloudy and mild rain showers will keep me from going back during this month. You may have great weather but then again you may have days of overcast skies with some rain. You could try end of Feb.–better possibility of good weather plus things are starting to heat up in the area in general.

  2. Hi! I’m looking to go to Mexico over Easter break with my husband and 3 kids ( 4,7,9). What AI resorts do you recommend. Beaches aren’t a deal breaker, more looking to keep everyone busy.

    • Without knowing other info like your budget, whether or not you like megaresorts, here are several suggestions across budget considerations: For a luxury family resort I would suggest Finest Playa Mujeres, Hotel Xcaret Mexico, or Moon Palace the Grand. For a lesser budget I would recommend Barcelo Maya Palace (this one is a megaresort, but you could stay on just that one property the whole time if you want), Iberostar Paraiso Maya (another megaresort), or Planet Hollywood Cancun, and for more budget-minded possibilities there is Crown Paradise Club Cancun, Riu Palace Peninsula or Riu Dunamar, or Grand Riviera Princess which is another megaresort. Hope this helps!
