Time for another suite review, on this occasion from the adults-only UNICO 2087 in the Riviera Maya. This is a five-star property and also a member of the Leading Hotels of the World (LHW); the resort has additional accolades including Travel and Leisure’s ranking of #7 out of 15 in the category of best Mexico Resort Hotels, in addition to ranking #3 in Conde Nast’s Reader’s Choice Awards in the category of best resorts in Eastern Mexico. The 2087 in its name comes from the resort’s latitude and longitude coordinates.
UNICO 2087 was reportedly born of a desire to create a new category of all-inclusive “defined by relaxed luxury and cultural immersion”. Many pieces of artwork and materials used at the resort are from local sources; several signature spa treatments have a Mayan influence and/or use ingredients such as blue agave, green clay, or herbs as part of the application ritual. Men take note–there is also an 80-minute facial specifically designed to rejuvenate men’s skin (spa treatments aren’t just for women anymore).
One major way this resort is different from others is their “Unlimited Inclusion”–for just a 25% service fee, guests can enjoy unlimited golf as well as select spa treatments/beauty salon services/tours and adventures. (To see a list of these select items, click here). The resort also offers a “Local Host” service which appears to resemble a butler or concierge’s duties at other all-inclusives.
The resort itself is beautiful with much attention to detail, offers free calls to the US and Canada, access to free high-speed WiFi, and free use of non-motorized water sports. There are five restaurants–one with a celebrity chef, five bars, and complimentary 24-hr. room service. There are mixology classes, painting/art experiences, and some live entertainment. There is no theater for evening performances.
While the resort has so much going for it, it’s main drawback is the beach. It’s on the small side and can be somewhat rocky, so beach lovers may want to pick another resort or buck up and enjoy the pools. This is not a party resort; its clientele ranges in age and are more sedate–no crazy pool games, no loud music, etc. Be prepared to relax.
One of the ways guests can relax at this resort is in their room. Some travelers only are in their rooms to shower and sleep, but at this resort you will want to spend extra time enjoying the comfortable bed, sitting area (indoors and outdoors), and custom soaps from the spa. The only guest rooms which do not have a terrace/balcony Jacuzzi are the swim-up suites–those rooms have two sitting hammocks and two full loungers instead. Guest rooms basically come in three categories–Alcoba suites at 624 sq. feet, Estancia suites starting at 1,270 sq. feet, and Villas at 1,996 sq. feet. I’ve chosen the Alcoba Oceanfront Suite primarily because it’s one of the more affordable options here with a nice view. In the video below, check out the wooden “plank” which can be set across the balcony Jacuzzi for drinks and/or food setup. Pure decadence, to be sure. Oh, and I almost forgot to mention, if you check out the various suites on the resort’s website, each room category can be explored with a 360 degree virtual tour as well.
