Time for another video tour of a room category which I believe deserves mention. This one will focus on the quaint all-inclusive with a lengthy name, Akumal Bay Beach and Wellness Resort (more commonly referred to as ABBWR) which is located right on Akumal Bay.
Akumal Bay is one of the most visited areas in the Riviera Maya because of its excellent snorkeling opportunities. Sea turtles, stingrays, multiple kinds of fish, and the occasional barracuda are seen here; snorkel tours to this area have been popular for many years.
With the Mexican government stepping in and attempting to reduce the overall number of tourists in order to save the coral reef and help protect the turtle population, vacationers wanting to see this outstanding attraction are looking more and more to stay right on Akumal Bay. Those wanting an all-inclusive resort experience only have two to choose from–the expensive Secrets Akumal and the more low key and less expensive Akumal Bay Beach and Wellness Resort.
The best guest room available at ABBWR is the Jr. Suite Penthouse–a two-story suite with a rooftop Jacuzzi, sun umbrella, two full lounge chairs, and a plexiglass panel which allows one a stellar ocean view from the top floor. While the room itself has some drawbacks (not much bathroom privacy, only sleeps two, solid half-wall on the first floor which impedes the balcony view while seated), it definitely offers a great room on Akumal Bay which should be lower in price than Secrets Akumal which is immediately adjacent.
ABBWR has always been a funkier kind of resort (in a good way)–enough so to attract many return visitors not looking for luxury, but instead wish for a solid all-inclusive resort option with easy snorkeling access. Be aware there is no swim-up bar here despite the fact there are multiple pools. Also, there is no standard website with various pages on amenities, rooms, etc,. (didn’t I say they were kind of “funky”); there is an online page with a slideshow, but if you want to know more about the resort they do have a FB page.
Here is a very thorough explanation of the Jr. Suite Penthouse and its amenities. Would you give this room category a thumbs up or thumbs down? Would you stay here?
