There will be a new “attraction within an attraction” at Chichen Itza starting next year. The National Institute of Anthropology and History has announced that Chichen Viejo, or “old Chichen” is a “Mayan palace within the middle of the original flora” with scenes depicting the creation of the cosmos; reportedly, the new site is a place where priests performed rituals related to fertility and “divine needs”.
The new site is located 900 meters (approximately half of a mile) south of the main El Castillo pyramid in the middle of the jungle. Guests will have to make a reservation to see it, however. This new site is an ongoing anthropological dig with work being halted during 2020 due to COVID. Only 3% of the new site will be on display to visitors.
Has anyone else been to Chichen Itza? Would you go again to see this new addition?
