I’m back from my latest trip to Cancun and just wanted to drop a note about the current immigration policy change for those taking a flight home from the Cancun airport.
Since the Cancun airport is doing a digital trial run to substitute for the traditional immigration form, be aware of the following. Since there is no more small piece of paper you now have to present back to airport personnel when checking in for your flight home, there are now many airport staff standing in airline check-in lines ready to take your departure information on their tablets. They will ask for your passport to scan, what you do for a living in your home country, the purpose of your visit, where you stayed for your visit, and how long you were in Mexico. If you don’t have any checked luggage and have accessed your boarding pass from a kiosk, you will have the opportunity to do this new departure process at your gate. After answering all questions, staff will put a small sticker on the back of your passport which may be checked by airline personnel when waiting at a gate for your flight.
I found the current procedure to be much simpler than the former one–I was always a bit nervous about losing that small piece of paper to hand in at the end of my trip. Now you just have to show up and answer some questions. Easy!
