Tired of experiencing crowded beaches in Cancun when staying at your all-inclusive resort? Tired of getting up early to “reserve” your beach lounger in just the perfect place with the perfect view? Then get ready to have an adventure!
There is a beach area north of downtown Cancun (actually, VERY north of downtown Cancun) which is as pristine as you are going to find in this area of Mexico. Soft white sand, turquoise ocean water, very few visitors, you would have the beach practically to yourself. What’s it called, you might ask? It’s called Isla Blanca Cancun.
Isla Blanca Cancun is located about 12.5 miles north of downtown Cancun–downtown Cancun is not where all the clubs are located in the Hotel Zone, it is at the very western end of the Hotel Zone. Isla Blanca is best known for its kiteboarding and kitesurfing schools, so if you are into those sports you would probably already know about Isla Blanca. Isla Blanca beach area stretches up all the way to the very end of the peninsula; it’s got ocean to the east and a lagoon to the west. If you walk on the lagoon side or want to swim in the lagoon, I have read one should be aware of potential crocodiles, while ocean swimmers should be aware of rip currents. Obviously, there are no lifeguards in this area and no ready jet skis to save swimmers in trouble, so use caution.
If you are staying at one of the all-inclusive resorts in Costa Mujeres (that’s the last current “developed” area of this peninsula), then Hotel Riu Dunamar would be the last all-inclusive resort you would be staying at prior to heading north to Isla Blanca. There are certainly other places to stay north of Riu Dunamar, but those are not all-inclusive resorts.
On my last visit to Hotel Riu Dunamar, I did try to walk north as far as I could on one of my beach walks in hopes of seeing this beach area, but I had to stop because of some aggressive dog behavior, plus I only brought along a small amount of water which necessitated my return to the resort. It’s just too far to walk; in order to get there from this resort you would either have to take a taxi from your resort (and negotiate a fare to have them wait for you), or rent a car at the resort which is probably your best option.
You will have to pay to park your car these days, and then keep walking north along the beach to the area where you want to spend some time. As far as I am aware, there are really no facilities at this beach, so come prepared with food and drink. Obviously, there are no bathroom facilities either, so bring some tp just in case.
The beach looks beautiful, I’m always up for an adventure and this looks like one worth pursuing!
If you are interested in this beach but want easier accessibility, there are other possible accommodations besides an all-inclusive resort. If you have a larger party, check out Villa Sunrise Cancun, an awesome looking property that can sleep up to 15–it even has its own pool! There are properties for this area posted on Expedia as well as Vrbo.
So, who’s going on this adventure?
