I haven’t posted for awhile because I was in Mammoth CA at a music festival for several days…I was planning on writing this post when I got home but I was delayed with a flat tire incident which put me in the middle of the freaking Mojave Desert driving 45 mph with a donut tire in 104 degree heat trying to find a tire store open on a Sunday in the middle of the desert. Needless to say it’s a rather long story but it had a good ending. But life is about experiencing adventures, I just don’t want a repeat of this type of adventure, thank you.
Anyways, if you are looking for a webcam to check the status of sargassum in the Riviera Maya, check out this one which is located in popular Akumal Bay by the ever popular Lolha Restaurant. If you’ve never heard of Akumal Bay, it is sea turtle haven–you can either purchase an excursion to go snorkeling with a group (excursions get you access to the better snorkeling areas where you are more likely to see these turtles), or you can try to swim out from the beach area on your own and snorkel where there is access–Akumal Bay is now rigidly marked off by ropes and buoys for boat areas, excursion areas, and general public areas which are strictly enforced. It was done years ago to help save the coral beds in the Bay (snorkelers and swimmers were standing on the coral in some areas which resulted in parts of the coral beds dying) as well as to stop such a heavy influx of visitors which were stressing out the turtles.
Check out this live webcam, plus if you are interested in renting a condo, home, or villa in the Riviera Maya (not an all-inclusive experience), Loco Gringo is an excellent place to start to explore your rental options.
