Here’s What To Do If You Still Plan On Traveling To Mexico…

Given the recent cartel-related developments in Mexico, many flights have been cancelled to Mexican destinations and tourists have been urged to stay in place.  It is in Mexico’s best interest to resolve this issue, and not just for tourists’ sake, but for the safety and welfare of its own people.

It’s an unknown when this will fully resolve itself, but it is likely that flights will resume at some point within the near future.  If you are an American citizen and still plan on visiting Mexico, here’s what is suggested you do prior to leaving:

  • Check with the US State Department at https://travel.state.gov.  This site is updated daily and shows safety advisories by region and not just country, real-time entry requirements, local laws, health alerts, and embassy contact info.
  • Enroll in STEP (Smart Traveler Enrollment Program) which is a free service at https://step.state.gov.  This allows the US Embassy to contact you if there are weather events, transportation disruptions, protests, or safety changes while you are abroad.
  • I believe the Canadian equivalent to STEP is travel.gc.ca/travelling/registration

I hope this helps for upcoming travel to Mexico.
