For those of you who aren’t aware of it yet, there will be a new way to travel around some of the Yucatan Peninsula. Five of the seven Maya Train sections will reportedly open Dec. 2023. Initial ticket pricing has been listed, but these numbers are not set in stone and may change based on multiple factors including whether or not to increase pricing during high travel seasons. Here are some facts about the Maya Train:
- The seven train sections include Cancun airport to Tulum, Tulum to Chetumal, Chetumal to Escarcega, Cancun airport to Izamal, Izamal to Calkini, Calkini to Escarcega, and Escarcega to Palenque.
- Tracks will cover approximately 1,500 km. or 932 miles.
- It is estimated that the Maya Train will carry approximately 32,000 people p/day.
- Locals will be paying 2.32 pesos p/km., Mexican Nationals will be paying 2.90 pesos p/km., while international tourists will be paying 4.35 pesos p/km. For international tourists, that works out to paying around $31 p/person from Cancun airport to Tulum give or take what happens with the continued strengthening of the Mexican peso. Still cheaper than paying for the cost of a o/w shuttle for the same trip.
- In addition to standard fares, the Maya Train will offer multi-day packages (1-3 days) which will cover admission to 100 attractions which includes 46 archaeological sites, six World Heritage sites, along with nature parks, cenotes, and more.
- Prices, of course, will be higher for business class seats, dining plans, and sleeping cabins with private bathroom.
What do you think? Will you be taking the Maya Train? If it opens while I am there this December, I will certainly be checking it out.
