Many have most likely already heard or read about the shooting at the Hyatt Ziva Riviera Cancun (this resort used to be Secrets Silversands). According to reports, this was a targeted execution involving rival drug gangs; two gang members were killed and one tourist had to be taken to the hospital with a head injury.
Understandably, tourists were shaken by the event–those on the beach nearest to the shooting began running while other guests locked themselves in their rooms. Some guests were guided by staff into secured rooms behind the kitchen area of the resort. After the event, many guests gathered in the lobby area to “decompress”.
I can understand how vacationers would be quite concerned about traveling to this area due to escalating gang activity; this event occurred just a couple of weeks after two tourists were killed in drug gang crossfire in a Tulum restaurant. I have been traveling to Cancun and the Riviera Maya since around 2012, sometimes several times a year, and have never been in a situation where I have feared for my life. This seems to be another case of “in the wrong place at the wrong time”.
