It’s been a long time coming with many animal activists/animal rights groups campaigning for the dolphin pool closure at the Barcelo Maya Grand resort, and finally it has occurred.
Profepa (Mexico’s Federal Attorney For Environmental Protection) has suspended dolphin shows and interactions at the resort’s dolphin pool due to lack of permits and activities not included in the management plan of dolphin performances which has led to the endangerment of these animals at this resort location. Reportedly, two dolphins died in 2024 and an accident occurred in January 2025 where a dolphin, while attempting an acrobatic move for guests, landed on the concrete outside of the pool enclosure. Pretty grisly…I’ve seen the dolphin pool when I stayed at this resort and it is super small for one dolphin much less multiple ones they had in there.
Glad to see its closure…the resort is too good to have its reputation marred by such occurrences.
