I’ve recently had multiple individuals email me inquiring about my resort recommendations for a great honeymoon.  Some give me info about what they want from their honeymoon stay (re. romance, choice of activities, setting etc.) while others just ask an open-ended question.

So I thought I would post about some of my own personal favorite recommendations and why I’ve chosen them with the intent of providing some guidance for those with a similar question.  Since this is a blog about Cancun and Riviera Maya resorts, the recommendations are only focused on resorts in this part of Mexico.

Most honeymooners like to focus on strengthening their connection during a honeymoon, so there is a need for privacy.   Here’s my top 3 in regards to that factor:

• The ultimate in privacy can be found at Viceroy Riviera Maya.  This is an all-inclusive optional property (more like a luxury hotel rather than a resort) with only 41 private villas, not just guest rooms.  Villas are individually placed in the extensive mangrove jungle so that each one provides privacy–there are outdoor showers as well as lovely indoor showers, private terraces with their own plunge pool (some are heated) with full loungers and daybeds, delightful individual walkways leading to each villa, and beautiful decor throughout.  This resort even has a soap concierge who will be more than happy to cut off a large soap-sized piece for your bathroom pleasure.  Luxury villas are 1,000 sq. feet with Premium Villas having a separate sitting area and larger terrace with 1700 sq. feet. This resort has one pool, two restaurants, and one bar with a stellar ocean view; staff will take drink and food orders poolside and on the beach. FYI:  Some potential negatives–this resort accepts ages 12+ but there are absolutely no children’s/teen amenities here so there are rarely any kids that stay here.  Also, the beach has a rocky ocean entry, so beach lovers may not be too happy about this factor.  Keep in mind that beachfront villas lack the complete privacy factor because their plunge pool is out in the open with a sea view.
• Book the Romance Villa With Private Plunge Pool and Butler Service at JOIA Paraiso by Iberostar.  A perfect choice for honeymooners, this suite is 2,088 sq. feet with its own walled “backyard” with its own pool, full loungers, and daybed.  Your butler will provide a private en-suite check-in experience, be at your beck and call until late, solve any problems you might experience, make dinner reservations for you, and make sure your vacation needs are met.  Guests in these suites also have access to bicycles with which to ride around the resort or the adjoining resorts since JOIA is part of a very large megaresort property.  This is an adults-only resort with access to 4 other family-friendly resorts and amenities like a wave pool, lazy river, waterslides, grotto swim-up bar, and lots of entertainment venues.  There are pickleball courts across the resort’s main road for those who have enough extra energy to have a different kind of fun, if you catch my drift…
• Beloved Playa Mujeres would be another perfect choice for those who want to maximize privacy.  This is now a couples-only resort with just 109 suites; suite size ranges from 960 sq. feet to 1,862 sq. feet.  This resort offers 10 different suite categories, I would suggest that honeymooners splurge on this one and book the Beachfront 2-Story Casita Suite With Plunge Pool instead of the Honeymoon Suite.  This resort has a lovely swimmable beach, 3 pools, 4 outdoor Jacuzzis, 4 restaurants, a food truck, a sushi bar, 3 bars, a sports bar, and a coffee shop–lots of amenities at this location.

Want some additional choices honeymooners? Here are a few “Honorable Mentions”…

• Majestic Mirage Costa Mujeres is actually a family-friendly resort but it does have its own adults-only section.  I recently stayed here in a Mirage Club Plunge Pool Suite Oceanfront and let me tell you that this suite category has plenty of privacy–not as much privacy around the resort as one would hope for on a honeymoon but this suite category has almost complete privacy on the rooftop–with its own small pool and daybed for sunning plus you get a second mini-bar up there as well. This resort has one of the better beaches in the Cancun area.
• Secrets Moxche would be a great choice for honeymooners that want to be swept away by one of the more beautiful resort properties in this area of Mexico.  Pictures do not do justice to its overall stunning visual appeal; if you upgrade your room to Preferred Club you get a balcony Jacuzzi plus access to the rooftop pool, restaurant, and bar.  This resort has 8 pool areas, 10 restaurants, 9 bars, a 24 hr. coffee shop, theater with all the bells and whistles for excellent productions, a lively sports bar, and a speakeasy nightclub.  This would be a honeymoon choice for those who want a mixture of luxury surroundings, lots of amenities, and the chance to make lots of vacation friends.  You do not have to upgrade to the Impression side, however, since upgrading to Preferred Club will already give you access to a rooftop pool and lots of restaurant options.  Beach lovers will be disappointed at this location, however.
• The buzz is out about the new Secrets Playa Blanca resort…it is getting overall rave reviews for its beautiful architecture and decor, good food, overall vibe, and great beach.  I haven’t stayed here yet, but it may be worth it to check it out and see if this is a vibe you want for a honeymoon.

Hopefully this helps some of you get started in researching perfect honeymoon destinations.  Everyone’s honeymoon dreams are different, but there are enough resort choices in this area of Mexico to meet anyone’s desires…
