Riu Palace Las Americas New Renovation Additions

Riu’s most recent $12 million dollar renovation in the latter part of 2016 has brought about many changes to their Cancun signature resort (Riu Palace Las Americas)–some guests will like them, some will not.  Here is a list of what Riu has done with their $12 million:

  • rebranding of the resort to an adults-only (age 18+)
  • check-in glass of champagne
  • new concierge service
  • addition of a special wine list and romantic dinners on the beach
  • resort-wide complimentary WiFi
  • top-shelf liquors at all bars and in the liquor dispenser in every room
  • both pools and garden areas have been renovated
  • new décor and furniture in the lobby and all restaurants
  • Capuchino–coffee, pastries and ice cream section in the lobby (same amenity at Riu Palace Mexico)
  • Lounge 24–snacks and drinks available throughout the day and night (same amenity at Riu Palace Mexico)
  • buffet restaurant and terrace have been expanded

Prior room renovations had already been completed–these renovations included getting rid of the tub and making the bathroom shower-only, putting plexiglass panels on all balconies making ocean views easier to see while seated, and new balcony sliding doors.  With the adults-only rebranding, Riu has added robes in all guest rooms as well.

While I have been patiently waiting for new videos of the renovation, I have not been able to see any new ones posted.  If you visit the Riu website, there are some computer generated pics of the restaurants and theater under the Photos section; Trip Advisor also has some pics from recent visitors–I was surprised just how few of them there were, however.

  1. We used to love the Riu Palace Riviera Maya and Riu Palace Mexico in Playacar.
We were so disappointed in the renovations that we no longer book there.
The open bathroom concept, the removal of much of the plantings around the pool,
even the lobby is disappointing. The food and the staff are still great. The last time
we were there we remembered the staff and they remembered us, welcoming us “home”.

I’m happy to see that the renovations to Riu Palace Americas are not drastic like the other palaces. I have to look into it and find out where it is. We really enjoy staying in
Playacar. It feels very safe and is close to other activities. We have been going there
    every February for over 20yrs.

    • Fran: I too really miss the RP Riviera Maya, it was perfect the way it was, the rooms just needed an upgrade. Thank God they didn’t drastically mess with the RP Las Americas. It is located by Punta Cancun which is the northeast tip of the Hotel Zone. It is an easy walk to all the clubs in the Plaza Forum or Party Zone in Cancun if you are interested in that type of activity. It has a great adults-only atmosphere without being spring break-like which I really appreciated.
