PROFEPA’s Current Rules for Akumal Bay Snorkelers

As of March 28, 2017, these are the most up-to-date and concise rules concerning snorkeling in Akumal Bay:

  • Organized tours are cancelled until further notice
  • Visitors who want to snorkel independently (without a tour) can still do so
  • Snorkel fins are not allowed in Akumal Bay
  • If a turtle comes close to you or you find yourself close to a turtle (when they come up to breathe, for example) maintain your distance–swim away from them
  • Swimming and snorkeling is only allowed within the areas designated by buoys and ropes.  If none are present, swimmers/snorkelers must stay within 100 ft. of the shoreline
  • These rules also apply to guests staying at Secrets Akumal Bay and Akumal Bay Beach and Wellness Resort

PROFEPA employees have been patrolling the sands of Akumal Bay (along with some members of the Mexican Marines) looking for those who disobey these rules; some employees have even gone out in kayaks to talk to snorkelers.  While there is no current rule concerning life vests, they have been difficult to rent at times at the usual dive shops in Akumal Bay; at last report there was an individual renting them by Akumal Bay Beach and Wellness Resort for $5 I believe.
