For those of you wanting an update on the new Riu Dunamar, looks like it is slated to open the first week of December 2017 and is expected to be close to fully operational upon opening date. I originally had some questions as to its location, and from what I can gather it is situated north of Secrets Playa Mujeres more towards the end of the peninsula–next to Secrets is the new Palladium that is being built. While Riu Dunamar is listed as being in the municipality of Isla Mujeres, it is not actually ON the island of Isla Mujeres (which is a ferry ride across the sea). The new Riu is supposed to be a doable walk from the public beach area of Isla Blanca where winds are relatively stiff and kiteboarding is popular.
The Riu Dunamar has 740 rooms, 5 pools, 2 buffets (including an Asian buffet), and 3 a la carte restaurants. There are 7 bars including a lobby bar, sports bar, 2 swim-up bars, a lounge bar, plaza bar, and the bar in the disco which is open 6 nights a week. There is a water park with slides, access to non-motorized water sports, a Kid’s Club, gym, and spa. The resort offers complimentary WiFi, but no room service (it’s not a Riu Palace resort).
I’ve seen a few pics of the beach, and there are a multitude of newly planted palms/coconut trees–more than enough for shade once they are mature. Many other Riu resorts do not supply beach shade umbrellas or palapas, so it will remain to be seen how the resort intends to handle the situation in the meantime.
I plan on staying here for several days Feb. 2018, then on to the new Xcaret Hotel Mexico for the remainder of my stay. In the meantime, here is a short video showing some computer generated areas of the resort.
