Breathless Riviera Cancun Resort and Spa

Opening its doors in 2016, the new Breathless Riviera Cancun Resort and Spa lies just north of Puerto Morelos–a short 20-min. ride south of the airport and a quick start to one’s vacation.  The Breathless resorts within the AMResorts chain are geared towards the young  (and the young at heart) who want a more party-oriented vacation within an upscale, luxury resort setting.  Breathless Riviera Cancun certainly delivers on all counts with its numerous guest DJ’s, foam parties, beach parties, hired entertainers of all kinds, a nightclub open until 3 a.m., and a party pool open until 2 a.m.  This resort is suitable for singles, couples, groups of friends, and even families with adult children vacationing together.  Bachelorette parties are also a hit with the resort offering a package deal featuring spa services, amenities for an in-room party, special seating opportunities throughout the resort, and a group photo shoot.

While party-oriented, a stay at Breathless Riviera Cancun is definitely not like spring break in Cancun’s Hotel Zone; there are areas to escape from the party such as the Xhale Club section which has its own private infinity pool, restaurant, lounge, and guest rooms with balcony Jacuzzis and private check-in.  Also, the Relax Spa by Pevonia specializes in body wraps for a totally stress-free experience away from the noise of any resort revelers.

In addition to the Xhale Club section, Breathless Riviera Cancun offers two additional resort experiences including the Energy Center, or Allure section, which focuses on mixing and mingling, while the Xcelerate Party Zone is for those who want to be in the midst of the party day and night.  Just like the Xhale Club, each of these sections also has its own infinity pool and set of guest rooms, but the atmosphere or “vibe” is different depending on which resort section is chosen.  The following can be a quick guideline in selecting what to book:

  • Think about staying in the Xcelerate Party Zone if you can fall asleep and stay asleep through anything, if you can’t get enough of club/techno/EDM (there is a DJ platform above the pool), or if you like easy access to a Jacuzzi which can seat 34 additional friends (called the Giantcuzzi).  The pool area (often referred to as the Freestyle Pool) is topless-optional; however, this is not considered to be a typical “lifestyle” resort–public sexual behaviors are not tolerated.

  • Think about staying in the Energy Center/Allure guest section if you like to be close to many of the resort’s bars, nighttime entertainment, or if you enjoy easy daytime access to a pool area which includes built-in sectional seating, smaller versions of catamaran nets, fire pits, and a quieter swim-up bar.

  • Think about staying in the Xhale Club if you want peace and quiet after the partying is done for the day, or if you enjoy larger upgraded suites with a balcony Jacuzzi.

The only pool with restrictions is the Xhale Club (it is for upgraded guests only), while other pool areas are for all guests.  Check out the Xcelerate Party Pool’s see-through panel at the infinity edge–beachgoers can see into the pool which makes for interesting viewing.

If guests can take their eyes away from what’s going on in the Xcelerate Party Pool they will notice that the beach offers white sand, loungers, Bali beds, shade palapas, and some natural shade.  Between the loungers and the water line is a berm, or raised section of sand, which helps prevents erosion; there is some natural flora atop the berm so it is not unsightly.  However, the height of the berm in certain areas may interfere with unobstructed ocean views for those seated in their lounger or Bali bed; since guests are not permitted to drag their lounger to water’s edge, some may not enjoy their view.  Non-motorized water sports are offered including kayaks and hobie cats, while more sedate activities can be found at the beachfront bar with swings for seats.  Ocean swimmers will find some areas of small rocks at ocean entry, so it’s best to bring water shoes.

When finished with daytime activities, the guest rooms at Breathless Riviera Cancun provide vacationers with luxury surroundings and modern amenities including in-room iPads which can be used to make spa appointments, check restaurant hours/closures, order room service, or go online; two USB ports are part of the iPad in order to charge devices or upload photos.  The most notable aspect of the room is the wall area behind the headboard which can be programmed to light up in various colors and provide a different ambiance depending on one’s mood.  While the rooms are beautifully decorated and wonderfully appointed, non-couple guests staying in Jr. Suites may find the shower placement awkward since it is located close to the bed with only a curtain over part of the glass enclosure to provide privacy (there is no separate, enclosed bathroom area in the Jr. Suites).  Although the shower is very large and has dbl rainforest showerheads, the lack of privacy for some guests may be a deciding factor to either upgrade to a larger suite or book a different resort.
