Hyatt Ziva Cancun

Surrounded on three sides by the aquamarine sea with snorkeling right off the beach, the upscale Hyatt Ziva Cancun offers vacationers an enviable location in Punta Cancun (the northeastern tip of the Yucatan Peninsula).  Occupying the former site of Dreams Cancun, this new luxury all-inclusive resort has been expanded and remodeled from top to bottom to the tune of $85 million–new additions include the adults-only Premium Tower (now called the Turquoize Tower), swim-up suites, and adults-only rooftop pool over the lobby with its amazing view (this pool has recently been allocated for guests staying in the Turquoize Tower only).  The onsite dolphinarium still remains but the enclosure has been deepened to accommodate five dolphins; there are over 20 suites in the existing pyramid building geared towards families enjoying dolphin encounters as a part of their resort experience. (As of April 14, 2016, the dolphinarium was not yet open for business due to the paperwork necessary to OK this activity as being safe for the dolphins).

Entering the lobby, guests have an expansive view of the main pool and the Caribbean Sea beyond–looking upwards, guests can see through the plexiglass panels if anyone is swimming in the rooftop pool.  Mayan influences dominate this public space with indigenous carvings and the use of local stone, woods, and fabrics.  A wide, grand staircase leads guests down to the main pool area with its elevated infinity-edge section along with a lower pool area.  On the lower level there is a pool bar, swim-up bar, and separate Jacuzzi to the left while on the right is an activities pool and dolphin enclosure just beyond.  Many loungers surround the lower pool along with shade umbrellas–the newly planted palms still have a long way to go before they provide any natural shade.

On the other side of the adults-only Turquoize Tower and Club guest room building is an additional pool.  It is very similar to the lower level pool off the lobby in that it includes an elevated infinity-edge section, separate Jacuzzi and pool bar, but it does lack a swim-up bar.  Many loungers and shade umbrellas also surround this pool while a very wide expanse of beach is only a short distance away.

This stretch of beach is wide and very long since it goes all the way south to Punta Nizuc by the Club Med property at the edge of the Hotel Zone; guests can walk south for miles past many of Cancun’s popular resorts.  Hyatt resort guests have loungers and shade palapas on the wide beach section close to the resort, but it is a longer trek to the ocean on harder, more compact sand in comparison to the resort’s other beach.

Yes, Hyatt Ziva Cancun does have two separate beach areas–it’s one of the advantages of being located on the tip of a peninsula.  The primary beach lies just beyond the main pool and is swimmer/snorkeler-friendly; it also has loungers, shade palapas, and offers five palapa huts for oceanfront massages.

Guests may also check-out non-motorized water sports equipment here including kayaks, hobie cats, and paddle boards, but it’s best to bring one’s own snorkel gear since there is an hour limit when using the Hyatt’s.  Those who book scuba and other select water sports excursions can use the long dock right off the beach, while guests just looking for delicious tacos or cold cervezas can find them at Habaneros, a casual beachfront restaurant (look for the swing seats!).

Guest rooms in all existing buildings have been renovated while the new adults-only Premium (Turquoize) Tower (age 18+) offers even more rooms with superlative sea views.  The Hyatt has outdone itself and provided vacationers with a myriad of places to lay one’s head:  five general room categories with 25 different room choices spread across all categories–there is definitely a specific room type for any vacationer’s wants or needs.  Standard amenities include spa-like bathroom with rainforest showerheads, a sitting room area, multiple USB ports, complimentary resort WiFi, 24-hr. room service, maid service twice a day, Bluetooth speakers, mini-bar, digital safe, and private balcony or terrace from which to enjoy the sea view.  Club category rooms offer a private lounge and concierge service, while swim-up suites (age 13+) give guests their own private pool.  Tubs are not a standard amenity in all rooms, however, which may be an important consideration for families with babies or young children.

Since this is slated as a family-friendly resort, it’s good to know that Hyatt has provided a KidZ Club for ages 4-12 which includes a club house, arts and crafts space, and separate children’s pool area with water slides and splash fountains.  Kids will also enjoy the dessert-only shop, Pasteles, which features flowing chocolate fountains, mounds of gummy bears, plates of cupcakes, and homemade cotton candy, to name just a few of the delicious treats.  While the buffet has a separate, lowered section just for little ones to reach their own food, the resort has also attempted to accommodate younger children in their evening entertainment schedule with an 8 p.m. start time so that many have an opportunity to see an evening show prior to bedtime.  Teens, on the other hand, do not have a dedicated space similar to the KidZ Club, but the 24-hr. self-serve snack bar (24 Horas) has an air hockey and foosball table.

Adults have their own opportunity for fun with an onsite sports bar and microbrewery managed by Hyatt Ziva Cancun’s own brewmaster, Juan Jose Garcia; the resort also offers tequila and wine tastings.  Those looking for late evening fun will be happy to know that the resort is an easy ten-minute walk to Plaza Forum where most of the popular nightclubs are located (Coco Bongo, Mandala, The City) which makes partying into the wee hours more hassle-free.  Fitness buffs have a fully-equipped gym with an ocean view and a walking/jogging path (it takes some effort to work off the calories from the delicious food and drink which can be obtained from the 17 restaurants and bars).  Spa lovers will enjoy the massage waterfalls as well as the peerless ocean views from the hydrotherapy circuit, while children can receive certain spa treatments as well.
