While there have been an increasing number of media reports concerning violence in Cancun and the Riviera Maya, it is important to keep in mind the areas/neighborhoods in which these events occur. Both the Riu Dunamar and Hotel Xcaret Mexico are open for business, just as promised. From what I have heard, there are the usual soft opening issues–getting some elevators to work at the Riu, some communication issues at Hotel Xcaret (limited English speaking from some staff), a la carte restaurant limitations with a less than full house, but these are not out of the ordinary issues given a brand new resort opening. A pleasant surprise is the water park opening at the Riu (I didn’t even know they had adult waterslides).
While I never like to take along expensive jewelry while on vacation (with the exception of my wedding ring), that doesn’t mean that I don’t like to accessorize while I visit my favorite beach resorts. I have found the perfect compromise–SumnerDSigns by my very good friend, Dede Sumner. Not only have I taken earrings and ankle bracelets with me on vacations, but I also have a number of beach-related suncatchers at home which helps remind me of my favorite places on earth–give me sand, sea, and sun anytime (oh, and a swim-up bar as well). Those who have longer hair will also appreciate hair clips with a beach theme.
