Vendor Shooting at Riu Palace Peninsula

Sad day to admit that Cancun may be joining the ranks of other larger cities anywhere in the world in terms of firearm violence.  Whenever I have visited Cancun I always traveled around thinking I was perfectly safe in a beautiful and well-monitored tourist environment.  Unfortunately, I may have to re-think that position.  Yesterday there reportedly was a shooting near the Riu Palace Peninsula infinity pool which involved a beach vendor and some other Cancun locals.  The bullet entered the vendor’s lung and he was later pronounced dead on the way to the hospital.  Needless to say there was pandemonium amongst the guests (this resort is family-friendly so a lot of frantic parents) with some Riu resort staff either denying the incident or telling guests not to discuss the matter.

Breathless Riviera Cancun Postpones Opening Date

The much anticipated new AMResort, Breathless Riviera Cancun, has postponed its opening date much to the disappointment and frustration of many.  Instead of May 5, the resort’s new opening date is May 25.  Guests who’ve made direct bookings have been offered several alternatives–Dreams Riviera Cancun, Secrets Capri, Secrets Playa Mujeres, Secrets the Vine, and Secrets Silversands.  Those who made third party bookings (Expedia, etc.), are still waiting to hear what their alternative resort choices will be; the exception are those who booked through Cheap Caribbean or Apple.

Drone Video of Catalonia Riviera Maya/Yucatan Beach Resorts

Here’s a recent drone video of the shared properties of Catalonia Riviera Maya and Catalonia Yucatan Beach Resorts.  I like how it gives a better perspective of the rocky coastline so that vacationers can decide, especially if they are beach lovers, whether this is the right property to book or not.  Take a look!

Single Supplement Deal at Hideaway Royalton Riviera Cancun

Solo travelers pay attention!  The Royalton Riviera Cancun is offering a 4-night deal at the Hideaway which is the adults-only section of the resort.  Travel dates are supposed to be between August and October; bookings are supposed to be made by April 30.  Those who book will get up to 55% off and no single supplement charge.  If you’ve ever traveled solo, you know the strain this can put on your wallet–being penalized financially for traveling solo can be a huge deal, so it’s a relief to finally see a resort address this issue, even if it is for only 4 nights.  Let’s hope this starts a trend!!  Here’s the link.

Getting to the Beach in Akumal Bay

For those interested in where the new entry point is to Akumal Bay and swimming with the turtles, here is a link from the CEA (Centro Ecológical Akumal).  In understanding the map it would help to have some prior experience with the area–just remember to keep to the left instead of going straight on the sandy path and head towards the Akumal Dive Shop.

New Trend in Aqua Exercise?

I wonder if this will be the new trend in aqua exercise at all the resorts or just the upscale ones.  I first discovered the aqua bikes at Secrets Akumal in November, then read that Valentin Imperial Maya and Secrets Silversands also have the same equipment.  Does anyone else know if any other resorts have started this exercise program?  Let me know!
